International Gold Key Comics
International Gold Key Comics was an American comic book publishing company that was active from 1962 to 1984. It was originally known as Gold Key Comics, but it changed its name to International Gold Key Comics in 1970 to reflect its growing international presence.
Gold Key Comics was founded by Western Publishing, a company that had been publishing comic books since the early 1940s. Gold Key’s early titles were mostly licensed properties, such as “Little Golden Books” and “Walt Disney Comics.” However, the company soon began to publish original material, including the popular “Turok, Son of Stone” and “Magnus, Robot Fighter.”
In the 1960s, Gold Key Comics expanded its international presence by licensing its titles to publishers in other countries. The company also began to produce original material specifically for the international market. As a result, Gold Key Comics became one of the largest and most successful comic book publishers in the world.
In the 1970s, Gold Key Comics began to face competition from new publishers, such as Marvel Comics and DC Comics. The company also lost the licenses to some of its most popular titles, such as “Turok, Son of Stone.” As a result, Gold Key Comics began to decline in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
In 1984, Western Publishing sold Gold Key Comics to Pacific Comics. Pacific Comics published Gold Key Comics for a few years, but the company eventually went out of business.
Gold Key Comics was a major force in the comic book industry for over two decades. The company published a wide variety of titles, including licensed properties, original material, and international editions. Gold Key Comics also played a major role in the development of the comic book industry in other countries.
